The Gole di Tiberio

GOLE DI TIBERIO, ADVENTURE AND RELAX BETWEEN NATURE, HISTORY AND LEGENDS

Wild nature, ancestral landscapes, adventure and fun are the elements that make a day spent in the Gole di Tiberio unforgettable.
This natural treasure, shaped by the slow erosion of the Pollina river over 200 million years, is located in the Madonie region, between Castelbuono and San Mauro Castelverde, just a short distance from the Insulae resort in Cefalù. Since 2001, it has been part of the UNESCO European Geopark Network sites.

Set in the Mesozoic rocks of these natural canyons, it is still possible to observe ancient fossils from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, making it a site of particular geological significance. Between the overlapping layers of the canyon walls, the eras of the Earth unfold in a silent narrative spanning millions of years, reminding us of the majestic power of nature.

The Gole di Tiberio are also home to many plant and animal species, particularly birds and reptiles, which find their ideal habitat in the rocky environments. The incredible variety of flora and fauna they house makes them sites of particular naturalistic interest, perfect for relaxing walks immersed in wild nature, surrounded by oleanders, willows, poplars and tamarisks. Visitors can explore by rubber boat or on foot, all the way to the nudist area created in 2005 by contemporary artist Robert Pruitt.

A day in the UNESCO geopark site with ancient canyons and natural pools

But it’s not just nature lovers and hikers who can find the Gole di Tiberio to be an ideal destination. During the spring and summer seasons, the rapids of the Pollina river turn into exciting routes for those passionate about river sports, who, after navigating 450 meters between rock walls reaching up to 50 meters in height, can end their adventure day with a refreshing swim in small natural pools or enjoy a delicious lunch at the refreshment area.

An experience whose charm is amplified by the popular myths that the gorges have kept as secret guardians, such as the one surrounding the ‘bandit’s boulder,’ a large stone wedged between two narrow rock walls that forms a natural passage once, it is said, used as a crossing point by the bandits that use to live in the area. Among the caves and dense vegetation of the gole di tiberio, they found a perfect hiding place in which launch surprise attacks and conceal stolen treasures.

A place where history and legends meet and coexist, surrounded by play of light and water, in an atmosphere of peace that only nature can provide.
