THE MANDRALISCA MUSEUM, ART AND HISTORY IN CEFALÙ
The Mandralisca Museum in Cefalù preserves significant history evidence and art of the region. The collection housed here makes it a must-see for those who, in their travels, wish to combine the pleasure of relaxing walks through picturesque alleys or along the seafront with cultural visits to enrich their knowledge.
Shaded by the Cathedral of Cefalù and just a 20-minute drive from the Insulae Resort, the Mandralisca museum takes its name and fame from baron Enrico Pirajno of Mandralisca, a learned philanthropist and enlightened patron, who lived here and dedicated his life to collecting works of art, scientific and archaeological artifacts. The goal of this immense collection was to make knowledge accessible to the working classes, to educate and instruct them, according to the liberal ideals the baron embraced, despite his aristocratic origins.
The baron’s focus on educating the new generations, one of his primary missions, culminated in 1853 with the founding of one of the first educational institutions in the Madonie region, open even to the less affluent classes and this institution remained located in Palazzo Mandralisca until 1966.
Today, the residence, which is spread across the rooms of an ancient 19th-century palace, is part of the Mandralisca cultural Foundation, which includes a museum, an art gallery, a coin collection and a library. In line with the wishes of its benefactor, it continues its mission of promoting knowledge to the community, particularly to the younger generation, through the organization of exhibitions, conferences and debates.
The cultural treasure of the baron of Mandralisca
By the walls of the Mandralisca house-museum, the value of antique furniture and refined objects once belonging to the family is perfectly preserved. Among the particularly famous artworks collected here, the “Portrait of a Man” by Antonello da Messina and the sicilian crater of the “Tuna Seller” are enough to make a visit to this place unmissable, where elegance, art, history, and science come together, becoming a shared heritage for all.
But the clear and visionary mind of baron Enrico Pirajno was not only nourished by humanistic culture. Evidence of the eclectic nature of his interests is found in his malacological collection, which includes ancient and rare specimens of sicilian and exotic mollusks and shells, both marine and terrestrial, as well as an ornithological collection consisting of around 130 stuffed bird specimens, including some madonie species that are now extinct.
The tour of Mandralisca palace is completed with a visit to its library, preserved in its original layout and with its 7,000 volumes, the library has over time become a reference point for the entire Cefalù community, as the city lacks a true public structure dedicated to this purpose.
The concierge team at insulae resort will be happy to organize a tour of the Mandralisca Museum for its guests, with an electric bus transfer from the resort to Cefalù, allowing the journey to be purely about the joy of discovery.
