The Madonie
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE
MADONIE PARK'S NATURE
The Madonie represent one of the most ecologically and geologically significant areas of northern Sicily, thanks to the incredible variety of ecosystems that they host and the history, ancient over 200 million years, the layers of this mountain range reveal a history that spans over 200 million years, with a maximum elevation of nearly 2,000 meters.
Here, to the west of the Nebrodi and Peloritani Mountains, where the sicilian apennines sketch the final stretch of their rocky backbone, begins a land waiting to be explored, with cool summers and winters of abundant snowfall, untouched nature, and picturesque villages that seem to emerge from ancient fairy tales.
Between rich waterways, monumental trees and natural canyons, in whose caves it’s possible to see snow even in the summer, rare or uniquely peculiar plant species find their ideal habitat, such as the Madonie Fir, symbol of the park, or Cupani’s broom. More than half of the native species of birds, mammals and invertebrates, including rare butterflies, griffon vultures, pairs of golden eagles that nest here, as well as deer, wild boar, weasels and foxes. A true treasure for eco-tourists and nature observation lover.
The key to such a prolific and varied flora and fauna lies in the different altitudes found across the areas that make up the Madonie region, and therefore, in the variety of climatic conditions present. Additionally, the thermal isolation achieved in the highest-altitude zones has ensured the evolution and survival of some endemic species.
To protect this precious biodiversity, the madonie park was established in 1989, becoming one of the most important parks in the mediterranean area. With an area of 40,000 hectares, it earned a prestigious place in the UNESCO Global Geopark Network. Inside the park, in 2008, was created the first and largest Adventure Park in Sicily.
Ancient villages, scenic views and culinary traditions to experience with Insulae
For nature lovers and those enchanted by small villages, the Madonie region offers a wide range of activities during all the year: from peaceful excursions into easily accessible caves, such as the Abyss of the Wind, where you can admire stalactites and stalagmites, to exciting river sports in the Gole di Tiberio, or magical trekking routes among the centuries-old giant holly trees of Piano Pomo.
Among the truly unforgettable experiences you can have in the park, it’s worth highlighting the Madonie Zipline, the highest in Italy. With its 1,600 meters of length, it offers to the bravest the thrill of flying like a bird of prey, with the Tyrrhenian Sea in front and valleys with over 150 million years of history below.
For those less brave but still eager to take home unique memories of their stay in Sicily, the park organizes tours of some of the most beautiful villages in Italy, such as Gangi, named “Borgo dei borghi 2014”, Sperlinga, an ancient fortress carved into sandstone and Castelbuono, famous for its greek, roman, arab and byzantine ruins, as well as for the annual Ypsigrock Festival.
Twisting little streets, ancient castles and monasteries, and terraces that open up to breathtaking views will guide visitors through tales of brigands and shepherds, tastings of local bread, cookies, olive oil and cheeses, the discovery of the millennial art of extracting and processing manna, a precious nectar obtained from the ash tree, used for various cosmetic, culinary and medicinal purposes.
A rich land, where the scents of the pastures, the authentic flavors of tradition and the shifting hues of its nature encapsulate the very essence of Sicily, a place the concierge team at Insulae Resort will be delighted to guide their guests in discovering.
